Detroit Diesel Regen Tutorial

Performing a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) regeneration, or “regen,” on a Detroit Diesel engine using Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link (DDDL) involves these steps:

  1. Connect Diagnostic Equipment:
    • Ensure you have a compatible laptop with DDDL installed.
    • Connect an RP1210-compliant adapter to the vehicle’s diagnostic port and your laptop.
  2. Vehicle Identification:
    • Launch DDDL on your laptop.
    • Connect to the vehicle’s ECM using the diagnostic adapter.
    • Enter the vehicle identification number (VIN) and select the appropriate engine model.
  3. Navigate to Regeneration Section:
    • Once connected to the ECM, navigate through DDDL to find the section related to DPF regeneration or aftertreatment diagnostics.
  4. Read Fault Codes:
    • Before initiating a regen, read any fault codes present in the aftertreatment system. Address any active fault codes before proceeding with the regeneration process.
  5. Initiate Regen:
    • In DDDL, find options related to initiating a regen. This could include “Forced Regeneration,” “Manual Regeneration,” or similar terms.
    • Follow the on-screen prompts and instructions provided by the software to initiate the regeneration process. The software will communicate with the ECM to control the regen.
  6. Monitor the Process:
    • During the regen process, DDDL will display real-time data such as exhaust temperature, DPF pressure, and other relevant parameters.
    • Monitor the progress of the regen and ensure that the engine is operating within safe temperature and pressure ranges.
  7. Complete the Regen:
    • Once the regeneration process is complete, DDDL will provide confirmation.
    • Clear any fault codes related to the regeneration process if they were generated during the regen cycle.
  8. Post-Regen Inspection:
    • After completing the regen, perform a post-regen inspection to ensure that the DPF is clean and that all parameters are within normal ranges.
